Mirror in the interior

A mirror is not a removable element of any interior. It can perform a wide range of functions and become an excellent assistant in improving the design of the room. In this article, we will analyze what the main tasks of the mirror in the design of the room and how to fit it into the interior of different rooms.

Visual expansion of space

This is, perhaps, the main role of the mirror in the room. Narrow spaces are doubled in an instant. For such a trick, it is necessary not to underestimate the size — it's better to install a mirror from ceiling to floor, or from corner to corner. And it doesn't matter which room we are talking about: a small hallway, a kitchen or a narrow bathroom. The method of properly placed "mirror wall" perfectly works in the rooms of any size and purpose.

But we should not forget about the sense of proportion. With large mirrored surfaces it's easy to go to extremes. For example, it is better to place the mirror facades of cabinets in a place where they will not fall into the field of vision of a person lying on the bed, otherwise there is a risk to be frightened of your own reflection while sleeping.

Adding perspective

Sometimes it happens that an interesting style solution appears in the course of finishing work. If you look at the room at the right moment and from the right angle, a properly placed mirrored surface will add more perspective and a sense of enlargement to the room. If you want to add magic to the space, to break it and make it unusual — then it is better not to be limited to one plane. But it's best to think about such moments during the planning, it won't hurt to have a 3D-visualization of the conceived project. Then you will avoid unnecessary mirror corridors.

Increasing the lighting

Installing mirrors opposite sources of light — lamps, chandeliers or windows — increases the level of illumination and can create an interesting play of reflection.

Emphasis on decor

Mirror with facet, installed next to interesting art objects (a painting, a vase or a statue) will emphasize the beauty and attract the attention of guests. Also, the mirror itself can act as an art object.

A mirror in the living room

In the living room it is better not to place mirrors opposite each other, because in this position it creates the effect of an endless corridor. This effect, despite its beauty and unusualness, will soon begin to cause psychological discomfort.

If there are few windows in the room, you can create a "false window" with the help of the mirror. To do this, the mirror should be placed next to a real window.

The mirror, which performs a decorative function, is recommended to hang at a height of one and a half meters above the floor.

Mirror in the bedroom

As mentioned before, it is better not to hang mirrors in front of the bed for the psychological comfort of the owners. The best solution would be to place a mirrored surface in line with the bed or above its headboard.

A traditional area where it is impossible to do without mirrors is the dressing table area. And it is not necessary to choose a model that copies the color and texture of the furniture. An excellent move will be the placement of a mirror, which will brightly contrast against the background of the general stylistics of the room.

And at the end let's summarize the general features of the placement of the mirror in the rooms:

  • mirrors, in addition to their practical purposes, also perfectly copes with the function of decor;

  • they are able to visually enlarge the space and improve lighting;

  • in the bedroom, it is better not to put a mirror in front of the bed. A floor mirror, on the other hand, will add sophistication to the room;

  • when decorating the living room with mirror surfaces it is better to place mirrors in a frame over the sofa.
