Columns in the interior

The column in the interior of the house symbolizes luxury, reliability and prosperity. To achieve the desired effect, it is necessary not only to choose the right materials, but also qualitatively design all elements of the column. In this article, we will tell you how to correctly use columns in the interior of the house, and what materials are better to choose.

The main elements of the design

Any column consists of three main elements, which have certain functions:

  • the base — the lower part, on which the load of the entire structure falls. Most often it is made in the form of simple shapes — rectangles or squares, but it can also sometimes be decorated with horizontal gutters;

  • the trunk — the main part of the column, which can have a circular, rectangular or polygonal shape in cross-section. The surface is either completely smooth or textured;

  • the capitel is the most expressive part, which receives the most attention in the decoration. It is always located on top and serves to distribute the load. This part includes the abacus, the plate that connects the capitol to the structure supported.

The column in a modern interior

It is not at all surprising that columns are still used today, even in modern interiors. After all, the most ordinary room can look different if it has at least a semi-column, not to mention a full-fledged element. With the help of columns you can easily bring to life various design ideas, because this element performs a number of important functions:

  • zoning. Often rooms are zoned with columns — a group of small neat columns that are placed in a single line and decorated in the same style. Such an element can combine beauty and functionality: if, for example, you decide thus to separate the dining room from the living room, then one of the sides of the columns, which is directed towards the interior of the dining room, can be equipped with small cabinets for storing spices, small dishes and other things. Also with the help of columns separate the loggia from the bedroom, so that more sunlight penetrates into the room;

  • pillar. When redesigning a home, many people dismantle interior partitions in order to free up space, thereby violating the original idea of the builders. Columns can be used to avoid destruction, it can be installed as a support for the floor slabs. Supporting columns should be made of durable materials and have a sufficient diameter. Recommended materials: concrete, metal, stone or brick;

  • the decorative component of any room can be ennobled and varied by decorating it with columns. In the interior it is better to use several structures, decorated in the same style. But do not forget that having conceived to erect such an element in your walls, it is necessary to start with it, and already afterwards to pick up the appropriate decoration and furniture for the rest of the interior;

  • conceal the flaws. Modern homes are equipped with a great variety of techniques. Of course, in this situation, throughout the home will be woven a lot of electrical cables, which should be hidden, so as not to spoil the overall aesthetic look. To help you will come up with false columns, which are made of wood or plasterboard. Such elements, as a rule, have an internal frame to which the wires are attached and equipped with a door.

Materials of manufacture

The choice of material depends on the purpose and style of the interior:

  • stone and brick. Some of the most durable elements, which will serve as a good basis for the supporting elements. But these materials have one serious drawback: they have a significant weight, this should be taken into account when choosing the number of columns and their thickness. In the house it is necessary to correctly calculate the mass, so that it does not go beyond the possible permissible loads on the floor slabs. If you only want to decorate the room, it is better to use stone as a finishing material. Brick elements will well complement the interior in the loft or Scandinavian style. Stone inserts will suit the country style, and marble will emphasize the elegance of the classic style;

  • wood. This material is known for its versatility and durability, so it is used in almost all styles for a variety of elements. Most often wood can be found in the style of country, Scandinavian style, Provence and eco. Wood can be painted, you can cover with a transparent varnish, in any form it looks stylish and noble;

  • metal. It is appropriate to use it in modern interiors, such as high-tech, modern or minimalism. The cold surface of metal will perfectly complement the overall stylistic picture of the room;

  • concrete. Durable and durable material that will fit best in the loft style, concrete will complement the feeling of incompleteness inherent in this style. But it is not necessary to burden the room, erecting a concrete post only to emphasize a particular feature of the interior. Such elements are performed only if it is necessary to perform support for supporting structures.

Columns in different interior styles:

  • modern suggests the use of unusual designs, which give the interior unconventional and attract attention. Such elements definitely will not go unnoticed;

  • classics. Classic is characterized by the use of sound materials and proper austere materials. Such an interior looks solid, but at the same time elegant and restrained. The most popular materials used in classics are wood and marble.

Columns in the interior — it is a luxurious accent in the interior, which will favorably complement the room and pleasantly surprise each guest of your home.
